How this calculator works

Add qualified employee tips to qualified self-employed tips, with the self-employed portion limited to net profit from that business. This form models one self-employed business; aggregate multiple businesses only after applying their own limits.

Cap the amount at $25,000 per return, including joint returns. Above $150,000 MAGI ($300,000 joint), reduce the capped deduction by $100 for every completed $1,000 of excess income. Married taxpayers must file jointly.

Estimate federal ordinary income tax before and after the deduction. The deduction does not eliminate Social Security, Medicare or self-employment tax. Check the IRS tipped-occupation list and current business eligibility guidance.

Worked example

A single filer with $80,000 MAGI, $63,900 taxable income, and $15,000 of qualifying employee tips has a $15,000 deduction. The estimated federal saving is $3,150 because the deduction crosses from the 22% bracket into the 12% bracket.

Assumptions and sources

This estimate uses 2026 ordinary federal income tax brackets and isolates this deduction. It excludes credits, AMT, capital-gains rates, QBI interactions, state taxes and payroll taxes. Enter taxable income before this deduction but after any other deductions. Eligibility confirmations are your own assessment; the tool does not verify your records. Rules reviewed September 30, 2026. The linked 2025 Schedule 1-A supplies the phase-out mechanics; 2026 bracket amounts come from Revenue Procedure 2025-32.
