Understanding Your Paycheck
Your gross salary and your take-home pay are very different numbers. Between federal income tax, state income tax, Social Security, Medicare, and any pre-tax deductions, a significant chunk of each paycheck goes somewhere other than your bank account.
Federal income tax uses a progressive bracket system. You don't pay your top marginal rate on all of your income. Instead, each slice of income is taxed at its own rate, and the result is an effective rate that is always lower than your bracket.
Social Security tax is 6.2% on wages up to $184,500 (for 2026). Once you earn past that cap in a calendar year, you stop paying Social Security tax on additional wages. Medicare has no cap, and high earners pay an extra 0.9% on wages above $200,000.
Pre-tax deductions like 401(k) contributions and HSA contributions reduce your taxable income, saving you money on income taxes. This is one reason financial advisors recommend maximizing retirement contributions when you can afford to.
How this take-home pay estimate is calculated
We annualize your gross pay, subtract the annual pre-tax deductions you enter, apply the 2026 standard deduction and federal tax brackets for your filing status, then subtract estimated state income tax, Social Security, Medicare, and any additional annual federal withholding. The remaining annual amount is divided by your selected number of pay periods.
Federal withholding assumptions use the IRS 2026 Publication 15-T. Social Security uses the 6.2% employee rate and the 2026 wage base published by the Social Security Administration. Medicare uses the federal employee withholding rates described in IRS Topic 751.
State income tax is a simplified planning estimate, not a payroll calculation. This tool does not model every W-4 adjustment, local income tax, tax credit, benefit, deduction limit, or employer payroll rule. Compare the estimate with your pay stub or a qualified tax professional before making a financial decision.
