How this calculator works

Each eligible taxpayer who is 65 or older at year end starts with a $6,000 enhanced deduction. Joint returns can include two eligible people. A married taxpayer filing separately cannot claim it.

For each eligible person, subtract 6% of MAGI above $75,000 ($150,000 on joint returns) from $6,000, stopping at zero. If both spouses qualify, apply that same per-person reduction to each spouse and add the results.

The optional additional-income scenario raises both MAGI and taxable income by the entered amount. It shows the deduction lost and the change in estimated federal tax. This is not a complete Roth-conversion analysis: Social Security taxation, Medicare premiums and credits can also change.

Worked example

Two eligible spouses with $200,000 joint MAGI each lose $3,000 of the $6,000 deduction, leaving $6,000 combined. At $250,000 joint MAGI, both deductions reach zero. A single eligible person with $80,000 MAGI receives $5,700.

Assumptions and sources

This estimate uses 2026 ordinary federal income tax brackets and isolates this deduction. It excludes credits, AMT, capital-gains rates, QBI interactions, state taxes and payroll taxes. Enter taxable income before this deduction but after any other deductions. Eligibility confirmations are your own assessment; the tool does not verify your records. Rules reviewed September 30, 2026. The linked 2025 Schedule 1-A supplies the phase-out mechanics; 2026 bracket amounts come from Revenue Procedure 2025-32.
