How Maine sales tax works
Every taxable purchase in Maine starts with the 5.5% state rate. Because Maine doesn't permit local sales taxes, that's also your final rate anywhere in the state, which makes totals easy to predict.
To figure the tax yourself: multiply the price by 0.0550. A $250.00 purchase generates $13.75 in tax for a total of $263.75. To back the tax out of a receipt total, divide by 1.0550 instead. The calculator above does both.
