Battery kWh per mile are increased for charging losses. The price per kWh is weighted by your home/public energy split.
Multiply charging cost per mile by annual mileage. Gasoline cost per mile is dollars per gallon ÷ MPG. Subtract the EV energy cost from gasoline cost to calculate annual energy savings.
Simple payback divides additional upfront costs by positive annual energy savings. Five-year net savings subtract those upfront costs from five years of energy savings. If electricity costs more, no energy-savings payback is shown.
At 12,000 miles/year, 30 battery kWh/100 miles and 10% charging losses, grid use is 4,000 kWh/year. An 80% home share at $0.18 and 20% public share at $0.45 costs $936/year. A 30-MPG car using $3.50 gasoline costs $1,400/year, so energy savings are $464/year.
Energy costs only. Maintenance, insurance, financing, depreciation, road fees, incentives and battery replacement are excluded. Prices and efficiency are user inputs, not live quotes. Charging-loss estimates should not be added twice to wall-rated efficiency. Payback ignores discounting and future energy-price changes.
