How this calculator works

Energy in kWh equals watts ÷ 1,000 × hours of use × number of appliances. Multiply energy by the electricity price per kWh to find cost.

The monthly estimate uses the entered days. The annual estimate assumes the same daily use on all 365 days; it is not simply the monthly value multiplied by 12.

The alternative uses the same schedule and rate. Annual savings equal the difference in daily kWh × 365 × price. If the alternative uses more power, savings are negative.

Worked example

One 1,500-watt appliance used 4 hours daily consumes 6 kWh/day. At $0.18/kWh, that is $1.08/day, $32.40 for 30 days and $394.20/year. A 1,000-watt alternative saves $131.40/year at the same usage.

Assumptions and sources

The entered wattage represents average power while used. Nameplate peak wattage can overstate refrigerators, heat pumps and other cycling devices. The estimate excludes fixed utility charges, demand fees, tier changes, seasonal rates and standby use outside the entered hours. The example rate is illustrative, not a live utility quote.
