How Inflation Works
Inflation is the rate at which the general price level of goods and services rises, reducing the purchasing power of each dollar. When inflation is 3% per year, something that costs $100 today will cost about $103 next year.
The US Bureau of Labor Statistics measures inflation using the Consumer Price Index (CPI-U), which tracks a basket of goods and services purchased by typical urban households. This calculator uses annual average CPI values from 1913 through 2025.
The formula for adjusting between years is straightforward:Adjusted Value = Original Value × (CPI in target year ÷ CPI in base year)
